Slickdeals.net Hack A cool way to flip hot deals!

There is this little gem on the internet that will help you either a) make you some money or b) give you a good deal on items fround througout your city. I have to thank Nightrunner for introducing this one to me a few years back.

Here is how the slickdeals.net hack works. I only call it a hack because it is basically a short cut  to a ton of due diligence! First log in to http://www.slickdeals.net/ There are forums which will have postings of deals all over town. You can basically sift through these deals by going for only the "4 thumbs up" or "5 thumbs up". Look for a deal on a item that you want to buy for yourself or re-sale.

Next, log into http://www.ebay.com/ . To sift through the item you want to buy/re-sale, you'll want to sort through it buy showing the "show cleared items" button. Type in the product and click on this button. It will show you all of the site listings that have cleared or will clear! If your item is more than the intended purchase, congrats, you'll make some money (subject to market demand and liquidity). If you are buying this for yourself, then at this point you are done. For people re-saleing their item, read onward.

The final part of the Slickdeal.net hack is to take the overall amount and find the lowest or next lowest price on ebay (you'll want a quick sale so you can move on to the next product). Afterwards log into http://www.craigslist.org/ and list your item. For quick sales, try to focus mainly on electronics. There is also a newer site http://www.backpage.com/ which happens to link to online newspapers in the area. If you comb through the deals at http://www.slickdeals.net/, it can be a great way to suplement your day job.

It's the little tricks I do...

People wish to know the best way to save money. I get asked this all the time: "How do you save so much money working for Sam's Club?" I reply simply, "It's the little things I do." Trust me, every  little thing adds up. I am not kidding when I say this. I get paid in food for my computer repair work. I use warranty sales to get more food. I walk to work, "rain or snow". I invest passively. I rent a studio apartment. I work Sundays and I keep the same job due to stability.

These little things hhave made it possible to save a lot of  money. If I look back, at the year before last when I had a little to a thousand dollars in my name I can honestly say I have came a long way. My current goal is to try to reach a six-figure net worth in 5 years. I would  like to reach 7 in ten years but I have to plan every financial move carefully. I just got a raise at work with being there two years. So now I will almost make $10/hr. And I am 5K away from 20K in liquidity. I did this on a paycheck of $8.65 per hour. I have been saving up and investing and it is paying off. Soon I will buy more stock and pursue a real estate deal (but more on that later). I am sticking to the main goal which is becoming the master of my own destiny. If there was anything I want more is to be able to work my own hours when I want to, but considering that I have yet to find such a job, Sam's Club doesn't treat me too bad; so I think I'll stay until I get one of my crazy to-do's out of the way. (To get the afrementioned I would have to become self-employed)

The Return Policy of 90 Days at Sam's Club Will Officially Be Enforced

To all of you that think that the LCDs are still "grand fathered in" I am just doing this response to let everyone know  that Sam's Club's old it is not. ALL electronic devises that are not related to software are not grandfathered in anymore. As of today, I get to reject whatever is not covered under the return policy of 90 days or the 1-3 year N.E.W. purchased survice agreement. So for better or for worse,  when you bring an electronic device back to the store make sure your reciept covers it prior to the 90 day purchase. The only exception to that rule is any device purchased before November 1st, 2009. Those items are still "grand fathered" in, but once they are returned, that's it. You cannot bring back anything after the 90 days. So if  you do not get a "service agreement" on the purchased item and it breaks down after 91 days, for better or worse it is yours to keep.

Wal-Mart lays off 11,200 Sam's Club Employees

I only talk about Wal-mart's layoff for two reasons: 1) there is a lot of people complaining about how "unjust" they are and 2) there is this inherent "entitlement mentality".




First off, the Walton family do not owe anyone anything (unless of course they get sued for someone getting injured on their property). Second off, there are plenty of businesses going out of business. Wal-mart is doing what it can to stay in business. 2009 has been a rough year for those in other retail stores, and do not think for a second Wal-mart is omnipotent from going out of business. For all these people trying to nanny a crowd into believing that Wal-mart should show some compassion, stop it. These people do not actually know what the store figures usually are. We are losing money on some days while gaining on others. The Sam's Club I work at is doing good because we really put forth an effort to stay in business. So instead of pointing the finger at Wal-Mart and its shareholders, why not create a business that gives people jobs? Wal-mart is one of the highest suppliers of labor next to McDonald's.



Third, for those that say this would not happen if one was part of a union, I would say get off your high horse. Unions only drive up prices. When I went to Safeway to buy food, I couldn't get any there because the prices were too high for my budget. Unions drive up wages and prices. End the end the first jobs to be cut are actually union jobs. Look at the motor and culinary worker's union in Nevada. Las Vegas is a dead zone right now and most of those union workers have lost their job.



I would like to conclude here with a lesson from Aesop about the cricket and the ants.



The Cricket liked to play all day and not store food for the winter and the ants seeing that winter was around the corner wanted to prepare for the blizzard for they knew that hunting for food during winter would prove fatal to them.



One day the Cricket made a lewd comment towards the ants that went something like this: "Hey the sun is great out here. You should not bother with collecting breadcrumbs."



The ants reply was "When the sun is gone there will be snow in its place we must collect food so let us make haste".



The arrogant cricket blew them off and continued to sunbathe. One day, the sun was replaced by a cold wind and some snow. That is when the cricket started to look for food. But, there was none to be found. For it was too late. There were just blankets of snow in its place.



Starving and out in the cold, the cricket asked the ants for food and shelter. The ants replay was "we have prepared until Winter's end, you have done the same, for you'll never make it to spring again."



The moral of the story is people should not wait for bad things to happen to start to prepare for a loss. They should anticipate it ahead of time. Notice that the ants are like the frugal minded person. This person will whether any storm necessary, because they do not want to deal with the harshness of cold. So they do it ahead of time.



The cricket was frivolous with his food gathering. Nair-do-well attitudes towards the economy is one of the main reasons why there are so many people living in tent cities. For those that continue to blow off problems throughout life will be met with many unnecessary hardships.



There is still time to adjust to the economy but it is running out. So what are you going to be? A cricket or a ant?

Black Friday Specials for 2009

Ok I have not let you down people! As promised I deliver the goods. So what is Sam's Clubs Black Friday list? Is is worth waking up at 4am this year?

There is some other stuff on the Black Friday list like a half karat diamond earrings going for $299 and there are Tommy Bahama Black Friday Watches going for $40. Also there will be trial colognes going for $10. While the deals probably were not as good as last year, I think if you need a good TV, Sam's or Wal-Mart is the way to go. Wal-Mart has a 32" LCD TV going for $297. But take it from me, there will be crowds. And if you think the Black Friday crowds are a problem, stay home. The retail industry has amped its security up this year, but that not to see that it will be completely safe. There is a lot of Black Friday merchandise to spin sell if you are into that kind of thing. I think it takes quite a bit of time so if the margin is not there for me I will not bother.

One Year Anniversary at Sam's Club

Hello there. Chuckie here with another blog jam packed with pure awesomeness. It has been a cracy year for me down at Sam's Club and I have to say, I am glad I have stuck it out this long after all. Perhaps my earlier entries were a bit pessimistic, but rest assured, I will continue to work there until I reach my goal I set out to reach in New Year's.

So far I have read 65 books and saved up $6,ooo for my re-entry into Japan. I will also take the JPLT level 3 so I can up my own personal stock and credentials. I could take the level 2, but I need more time to study for that one. While level 3, I can take it and pass it without studying. But I will study so I can refresh some of the Japanese that I do not normally use. I am in no way trying to slack off with the test, they are expensive to take because I have to go to either Los Angelos or San Francisco in order to take the test and I do not want to go over there in vain. When I do take the level 2 next year, I will have more time in order to catch up what I know and be able to pass it with no problem. So that is my goal-- to eventually go back to Japan in 2010.

There is also the need to address the issue of having one year at Sam's Club. Since they basically changed the whole structure of the pay scale, all I will get is a marginal raise. Since there might be employees reading this blog, I cannot go into further detail about it. However, I can say that my vacation and personal time has kicked in and I will use every bit of it to better my situation. I am a graduate from UNR and for the past 2 years, I have been working jobs with little chance of vertical movement. When I return to Japan, I will proabably work for someone else for a little while and then build up a marketing list and become self employed.

I have offically started back up my business on E*bay. My ID is marketmediaplus and I will sell certian items on demand. Right now I am just trying to sell all my books and video games so I can move with little problems. For the most part I have been celebrating my raise, so I have been eating out a lot, but that will stop. The glamour is done; my year is in; time to continue amassing wealth.

Focusing on Frugal Hobbies

One thing that keeps me from spending huge amounts of money is different hobbies with a low start up cost. One hobby of mine that I have is playing the guitar. I have finally gotten to the point where I can riff and chord my music up a little, which I am elated by this discovery. If you shop around, i wold actually bypass Fender and go with a First Act guitar. Luckily I have received one for free for my birthday. But if you are not one of the lucky ones, try paying $90. But hey, $90 to play guitar or pay $300 video game system: the choice is up to you. There are certain packages that even include the amp. Remember that if you already are proficient in guitar and you want a better one, you will have do some shopping around and First Acts and Fender will not be the way to go (since they are essentially stock machine parts). You might want to check out http://www.musiciansfriend.com, for some the better deals out there. They have some killer deals for the starving artist. While their effects pedals are a bit pricey, they have guitar deals like no other. In fact they give Craigslist a run for its money!

Another thing I do is look on the web for free e-books. No I do not mean downloading. I actually go to other peoples blogs and download their e-books and read stuff at http://writing.com, which by the way is a excellent site to have your own scholastic work or fictional work reviewed.

If you want exercise and for cheap, consider walking to work, especially if you only live a few miles a way. For me to walk to Sam's Club takes me about 30-40 minutes depending on how fast I walk. Walking really is the ultimate 'green' energy. It runs off of you!

Learning languages are also frugal from the start even though they get more expensive later on. When I was going to college, I started learning Japanese from UNR and yahoo chat rooms. YouTube really works wonders and i wish it was something I had when I first started to learn. Of all the languages, probably Spanish is the most easily accessible language to begin studying. You do not necessarily need Rosetta Stone (tm) in order to be able to gain fluency. If you have it already, that's great just focus on learning from that and keep your nose to the pavement. There are websites devoted to learning languages out there; you just have to look for them. One of my favorites is http://jisho.org, which is for looking up Japanese characters and learning vocabulary words.

Going to free venues in the paper is a good form of socialization and a nifty way of getting out of the house. Just because you are frugal does not mean you have to be a recluse. I look for free events through the Reno rag. Also there are things called books: you pick them up and read them. Books are the cheapest yet most important piece of media in the world. I can find books for free or $1 if i look hard enough. If you are reading this blog, then congrats, you do not need to be coached on such a cheap hobby.

Site Will Be Slowly Updated Until Further Notice

My updates will slow down until a) I get my own Internet connection or b) I get another good Wi-Fi signal near my vicinity. My apartments currently do not have Wi-fi, but I am only paying $225/month so I cannot complain. I will probably save about $1,000 more and then I will see what I will do next.

I am worried about the layoffs a little, for Sam's Club is poised to lay off 3,000 Managers. I guess the associates will run the floor. Overall our market is pretty steady so I do not think the layoffs will effect my club that much.

I plan on reading another ten books in February, so the pressure will be on me.

Wal-Mart Does Mass Lay-Offs

As you might know, there are a lot of retailers going out of business. Circuit City, went under, Home Depot laid off 75,000 workers, times are tough. It is indeed, "The best of times, the worst of times". People might have comfort in their jobs, but they really do lay offs in a indiscriminate factor: it is really all based off of seniority. In other words, most chains of employment will go "last hired, first fired". Meaning that if you were not with a company for a long time, then you might want to dust off the ol' resume.

How bad is it at Wal-Mart? Well it is starting to affect our business. While we still make a profit there, we are getting hit with less people. Meaning people are not going out; they are just saving their money. Right now, Sam's Clubs across the nation have laid off 4-5 people per club and they have over 500 clubs. Theoretically, that is over 2,500 people without a job. And they are doing the last five on their hiring lists. If you were a new hire, find another job is all I can tell you. I recommend getting one extra job should you get hired at Sam's Club. Wal-Mart, all depends on their location: if you work at one with low profit then there will be some people let go. That's just the way it is. They are a business so there is no use in becoming altruistic about the situation, people will have to be let go.

If you are one of those people reading this blog, then I feel for you. Tough times will only get tougher. Hopefully you saved money and had a contingency plan, other wise I do not know what to tell you. If they have to let me go then so be it, I always have been good at landing on my feet. I will just out perform the market. My area's profit margin went up 4% so I think there is much to be said about my work.

Wal-Mart New Revised No Overtime Policy

Happy late New Year's everyone! While mine was just a marathon of video games, I hope you have found yours more stimulating.

Here I am going to talk about odd quicks that go along in with the retail business. And I am pretty sure it is like this at a lot of places in retail. If you want to futher educate yourself on surviving in retail. I suggest, pretending you care by Norm Feuti.

Today's odd quick is overtime. People who are working paycheck to paycheck love this little word. But at Wal-Mart/Sam's Club, it is like one of George Carlin's 7 dirty words. You know which ones :/. So if you want to engross yourself in toilet humor, Wiki it.

Overtime is considered so dirty associates and managers refer to it by OT. And they no longer used the phrase write up, they call it a coaching. Wow! Like anyone cannot see through the euphemism. Now this actually gets me a bit angry because what a lot of managers do at Sam's Club. And while they do work 50-60 hours (depending on the department), it is not going to kill someone if they have to the finishing touch at the end of someone's shift. That is why they are being paid 30-60K to finish some work that is leftover. Why do I mention this before getting into their system? Because a lot of the Cash Office Supervisors and Managers actually cause people to get more overtime for someone else's extra stuff. In fact I have gotten warned two days ago by the same manager that said he did not care about over time. (At whose expense?) While he did not say it was a verbal coaching, he implied that I could lose my job if I get more. That is not to say he is not a good manager, but I could tell he being led by the operations manager who is bent on getting anyone with a fraction of a second of OT. And there are times when customer or "members" come up to me and ask me questions. So great, if a manager forces me into OT, I could get fired, if a member forces me into OT, I could get fired. I am starting to see why retail has such a high turnover rate.

So members and managers could potentially get me fired, great. Now there is a law that is in California which now applies to Nevada's Sam's Clubs and Wal-Marts as well. For any associate that makes over $10.50, they cannot work more than 40 hrs. However, since I make less than that, I have to abide by additional clauses. For anyone making under $10.50, they cannot work more than a maximum of 8.0 hours in a day. This also means that their corporate Sun Down rules is utterly pointless.

Sun Down means that the associate must finish all tasks assigned by the end of the shift. So if there is a new task that will take thirty minutes and you only have fifteen to go, you might want to start dusting off that resume. In short, do not take on any new tasks that are not part of the job desciptor. Disreguard Sun Down, do whatever you have and just go home. While Sam Walton might frown on you, he is not around to judge you. Corporate, however, is. So for now on, if someone asks me to do something at the end of my shift, I will refuse. If they so much as ask me to do carts and I only have thirty minutes to go, I will refuse or just do some and leave seven mintues in advance (I need time to put away stuff and whatnot). Here at Sam's Club, overtime is a dirty word.

Sam's Club Promo Part 3

It has been a terrific week at Sam's Club. I have received free food for two days straight along with Holiday Pay. I have sold about 40K in product while working the promo table. If I was in a commission job, I would probably have about 1.5K as take home pay. However I have to say Que sera sera and be glad I have a job during the recession. While most of the stuff I have sold have been of notable quality. You should really visit Sam's Club during our after Christmas Blitz. There be heads rolling at corporate =).

For those of you that missed the Nintendo Wii on the Santa Radar during the dreaded Black Friday, there will sales that will rival it after Christmas. They saying is good things comes to those who wait and waiting will be worth it. There will be more Nintendo Wiis sometime this Janurary, but it will likely be in middle Janurary at best. You know all that stuff that was $200-300 dollars during the holidays? It will fall like crazy and be clearance booty to be found. Arrg.

Pirate jokes aside, Sam's Club, WILL NOT be open on Christmas day. Stores open on Christmas day I think are just Wal-Mart, Target, and a few Resturants that serve fast food. If you want to survive without looking for a store this holiday, Wells Mart and Rainbow Mart look like winners.

A typical boring day at Sam's Club: and What I Do About It

Sam's club is a really good place to work if you just got out of school or are in school. It is a place where you can thrive as a worker ant, going from hour to hour making due, serving the member. But there are times when you get really slow traffic and it becomes outright boring. When this happens what do I do? How do I go on in total boredom. Or what seems like customer service frozen in time.

1. I find random stuff to do. I mean really random stuff. The first thing I do is look for someone in charge. If there is someone, I pester them for something random to do. If that does not work I read whatever is on the Wal-Mart Wire. If I feel that it is too boring to hear what Lee had to say or I cannot find anyone who pretends to be in charge, I zone--basically I grab a bunch of card board out of my aisles and throw it in the bailer, which usually is full and needs to be bailed. Then I wait for something random to come up on the radio and then I do whatever I need to do. However, on Sundays all times stands still. Everything moves at the speed of snails and it get so bad that I can clock the rate people chew their food in the cafe.

2. I push carts. Though I hate doing this, when I get really bored, it is a good time killer. Sam's Club is doing mediocre in sales and it is mainly due to the fact that Cost Co has three stores surrounding Sam's club and they are the competition. So when I push carts, I basically want to have a to do list before I leave.

3. Electronics needs cover because their is a lot of thievery that goes on over there. In actuality there is nothing we really can do about this except notifty Management that there is someone 'supicious' in the electronics department. I usually have fun with this and scare the bejesus out of theives by getting on the intercom and prompt "Scan and record electronics". In actuality I do not even think all the cameras work except for the ones near the cash registers.

4. I rip on members in the break room. Everyone has their own story. Like today, there was this one member that tried to run over my pallet jack and say I "was moving" when I was stationary. Then to add icing to the cake they tell me, "Members have the right of way". There was another case last week when this lady asked for a mixer when I was covering electronics. Now mind you, mixers are in a different department. She wanted an egg beater. I told her over the phone to give me a minute to walk over to the mixers because I had to cover electronics. She then began to yell at me saying that "no I should know the prices right now; do not give me excuses". Now at this point I was trying to tell her the prices and describe her the mixers and she just started to yell at me some more while I was trying to get her the price for the item. First I mentioned the Magic Bullet Tm blender, but she just kept yelling and she knew what she wanted from the beginning but did not say anything.

5. I wander around the store when it is really, really slow. I have to say this is something we are all guilty of at some point. Even some managers do it. Afterall, during a recession, who wants their hours cut? Unless you are totally bored and stuck in the tobacco cage where all time stands still, the answer should be no.

6. I cover other positions. I have done a variety of positions at Sam's club. I have done Night Merchandising, Center Section, Recieving, Hard Lines (My normal section) Electronics, Marketing, Tire Center, Greeter, Cart Pusher, and Demos just to name a few. When Membership does not know what position I am pretending to be that day, they just call me by my first name. :p

Well I will wrap it up here for now. We have a lot of positions at Sam's Club and I will probably do some more in the future. Time will only tell.

Snow in Reno

Going to work in this is not bad. I wish the snow in Reno only stayed this high. If that was the cash, then I would not have to worry about returning from work in the snow. I walk to and from work as a means of exercise and a way of saving money.

The payoff is great because I am able to maintain my weight and can tell people "When I was young, I walked 4 miles in the snow everyday!" But on a serious note: I hope the winter next year will not be as bad as it was this year. Too bad I cannot play in the snow :(. I could call in sick, take a paid day off and enjoy the snow, but that would be a bit dishonest now wouldn't it. Lately I have these inclinations that I should be more open to people ever since I got scammed by my two roommates. Call it reverse bad karma methodology or whatnot, but I feel if you are constantly be honest, you can eventually surround yourself with honest people eventually the payoff in connections will be larger than constantly looking over one's shoulder.

In short, it is a good mechanism to subconsciously weed out bad apples in life. However I should digress and say that honestly should not be coupled with brashness or feeble-mindedness.

Electronic and Vacation Promo at Sam's Club

Well while I try not to talk to much shop, (Who am I kidding; I talk shop all the time;)) I have to say if you are in the mood to get an HDTV or Blu-Ray system for the bedroom, maybe just want to a fantasy cruise or Hawaiian trip, Sam's Club is offering to give $100 purchase on each one of these selections in order to stimulate spending during the recession. While Wal-Mart Inc. Has a fairly healthy stock portfolio during the recession, that does not mean that Rob Walton is in his ivory tower.

Also the politics that shape Sam's club is beginning to become a bit shaken up. Lee Scott longtime CEO of Wal-Mart has stepped down due to strategic changes during the recession. Mike Duke is now going to be the CEO of Wal-Mart. This leaves a lot of questions for a lot people. What does that mean for the holders of WMT stock. Rest assured, according to his background, he has an in-depth knowledge in supply chain management and logistics. Plus Lee is not really going anywhere. He is simply stepping down to do a committee position for Sam's Club. Lee has been with Wal-Mart for roughly 30 years and has been CEO for 9 years.

I just wish they would demo some video games at my Sam's Club. I really would like to see some Fallout 3 or some Street Fighter 4 demos. We can play Alvin and the Chipmunks 8 hours straight, but we cannot play any Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Maybe it is for the best, because I would be playing some GH instead of zoning or merchandising. but I would also be able to become better at guitar.

Japanese Correspondance Going Well

I will keep this short since I have to do a morning shift at Sam's Club and they are going to kick me out of Burger king soon. One of my friends went to Japan for work. Right now he is working for a small firm that manages http://yahoo.co.jp/ domain. I think he does a lot of coding there and periodically does work for other websites. Believe me, he probably would make a website from scratch if he got he wanted to do what i am doing.

Anyways, he actually has been getting me contacts at English conversation school. In fact, at the rate he is going, I might find work over there in no time. He used to be my roomate but was forced to leave my house due to his father pressuring him. While he is weak willed in some aspects, he is certainly strong in other areas. (Like landing high paying jobs.) I think I stand a chance at going to Japan between working at Sam's Club and him searching for me. I will try to make the next blog longer for the sake of unique content. Good night everyone.

The First Step toward 1,000 miles

Greeting everyone. Welcome to Chuckiesblurbs.

I am your host Chuckie. =) In case your wondering where the reference in the title comes from, it comes from a Chinese proverb: "To begin journey of a thousand miles, one has to start with a single step".

So this blog will basically give you insight to my thought processes and my opinions. Kind of like Myspace except I am being paid to shoot the breeze at 3:48am while I binge on two to three cans of Monster.

Ok so a little about me. I have been in Reno since 2000 and have wasted away here for about 8 years now. Yeah, I know you think I would be happy with all the mini malls. Well that's the thing; I do not gamble at casinos. meaning that every single activity in Reno that there is to do has automatically been discarded for more hours on the net. I swear, between Monster and the Internet I have an addiction. Maybe I should attend the Internet Monster Drinkingaholics Anonymous meeting? Maybe I will get some other energy drink that tastes like crap like Rehab.

On to point #2: I have a tendancy to say whats on my mind at the moment and I will not censor it or go back and delete it. I will have to mind my Ps and Qs for this is definately for unique content and my slice of the pie. In other words, I will eventually be using those fandangled words that will cause mass panic and cause the community to shut down their information super airway and go into bailing out spree for other bloggers...or not. (Obviously, I like my politics and finance)

To not bore you, I will be writing reviews about different products, companies and employment oppertunities. Hey, everyone needs a little coin in these bleak times. Better yet, a forged passport, 20 ounces of gold, and perhaps a faux French accent might serve you even better. Right now I work at Sam's ClubTM, where our "Members" come first..or whatever propaganada that I should believe. I should say that I have been given a well of knowledge to tap into. Meaning most of the reviews will probably be from their affliates.

Oh wait, you want to know about "me". I graduated from University of Nevada, Reno with a B.A. in International Affairs and History. I went to Japan to study Japanese. (Don't worry, I will never post a blog in Japanese here. I do those on this site) If you do know enough Japanese, then I suggest visiting the site I mentioned and make use of it and make a friend, girlfriend, whatever. I guess I could set up a Japanese one in the future, but remember that I work for Wal-Mart and am using this blog to help raise my income.
